Jackson - Jackson Board of Education has taken first step toward construction of middle school by accepting in principal recommendation of citizens facility advisory committee; committee in August recommended district consider middle school as only viable option to relieve serious student overcrowding at R.O. Hawkins Junior High School and growing enrollment problem at nearby West Lane Elementary School.
Six area mental-health professionals will travel to South Florida later this month to assist Hurricane Andrew victims; making trip will be Mati Stone, Bob LeFebvre, Judy Johnson, Jim Berry, Dr. Bob McCool, and Connie Lape.

Elmer Lind, SEMO District Fair secretary, estimates yesterday's attendance at 2,301 people, 575 greater than year ago on second day of fair; highlight was Roxyettes Summer Follies in front of grandstand; show featured acrobatic team, dancers, singing and accordion music; today for first time, Curtiss Candy Co. six-pony hitch performs.
Enrollment almost exactly equaled that of last autumn as fall term began at State College Tuesday; college reports 990 students signed up on first day; first day figure in September 1951 was 992; college officials are pleased with showing; enrollment has been sagging at college and universities in all parts of country, chiefly because of draft and lure of high wages in industry.
75 years ago: Sept. 10, 1927
Establishment of airport in immediate vicinity of Cape Girardeau, providing landing place for airplanes, is suggested by O.E. Damron, local real estate dealer, who has been interested in such project for some time; pointing out that air navigation has passed experimental state, Damron says Cape Girardeau should establish landing field and erect appropriate markers with illumination at night to aid pilots.
Old-time wolf hunt, with number of Girardeans participating, will be staged tonight in rugged district east of Oriole, in northern section of county; Dale Reed and Virgil Davis will lead chase; farmers in Oriole neighborhood have reported number of depredations by wolves; Pearl Sides, farmer of near there, lost eight head of sheep, while Dr. O.J. Miller lost one.
