25 years ago: Sept. 1, 1985

Thomas Hahn and Christine Meier are installed as teachers for Trinity Lutheran Christian Day School during the morning worship service at Trinity Lutheran Church; Hahn will teach eighth grade, while Meier will teach fifth grade.

Those attending the annual gathering at Old McKendree Chapel south of Jackson on Sept. 8 will find a new structure on the grounds; a reconstructed log cabin, parts of which were known to exist 15 years before the first service at McKendree in 1819, stands across from the church.

50 years ago: Sept. 1, 1960

The Mid-America Boat Racing Association, sponsoring a marathon motor boat race between St. Louis and New Orleans on the Mississippi River, has arranged with Cape Central Airways to supply aviation fuel to boats stopping in Cape Girardeau early Saturday.

Shannon Kelley of Cape Girardeau announces his withdrawal from the taxicab business with the sale of his interests in the Small Rate Cab Co., to his nephew, Claude Kelley; Shannon Kelley is a member of the Cape Girardeau police force.

75 years ago: Sept. 1, 1935

Remodeling of a two-story frame dwelling at 27 N. Park Ave., recently purchased by First English Evangelical Lutheran Church, begins; all of the partitions will be removed from the first floor, leaving one large room for worship services; the three rooms on the second floor will be used for the pastor, the Rev. R. Riechman, as living quarters.

The Rev. W.J. Higgins, who moved to Cape Girardeau early last week to become pastor of the Assembly of God Church, begins his duties.

100 years ago: Sept. 1, 1910

The first session of the Interstate Trapshooters' Association meet starts in the morning at the fairgrounds; from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. the guns blaze away; C.G. Spencer, for several years the champion trapshooter of the country, is in first place in the tournament.

The Rev. Otto J. Gilbert, pastor of the German Evangelical Church, has decided to leave for another field; he and his family depart for Oklahoma City, where he has been called to a pastorate.
