Talks between the Shawnee and Cairo, Ill., school districts and their employees are at a standstill pending meetings with representatives of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in each of the districts; employees in both districts are continuing to work although their old contracts have expired.

Two Cape Girardeau residents and a Colorado man were killed in the crash of a single-engine Cessna 182 in Colorado; killed were Christian R. Hirsch, 23, and his sister, Margaret I. Hirsch, 21, children of Mr. and Mrs. Robert O. Hirsch, and the pilot of the plane, Craig Kolvig, 39, of Durango, Colo.

50 years ago: Sept. 1, 1956

A slow-moving cold front that enveloped all of Southeast Missouri brought a spectacular display of lightning and deluges of rain over the entire area last night and early today; major damage from the storm was in Benton, Mo., where a number of trees were blown down and electrical lines damaged.

With the cream of the crop from the state on hand, members of the Missouri Bow Hunters open their annual archery tournament here; competition takes place on a range in a wooded area on Highway 61 near the County Home.

75 years ago: Sept. 1, 1931

Work started yesterday on the redecorating of the interior and exterior of Red Star Baptist Church; the building is receiving a new coat of white paint and is already beginning to look attractive.

W.T. Webb of Sikeston, Mo., assistant right of way engineer of Division 10 of the state highway department, says the prosecuting attorney of Cape Girardeau County has been instructed to institute condemnation proceedings on all outstanding right of way needed for the farm-to-market road between Millersville and Daisy.

100 years ago: Sept. 1, 1906

The band carried by the Cooley & Hagan's floating show is given credit by those who know as being the best on the river; the showboat is at Cape Girardeau at present and this evening will feature a concert of the latest music, followed by the show.

There will be no celebration on Monday by organized labor in Cape Girardeau; the jolt sustained by the Central Trades and Labor Council when one of its members -- a spurious contractor who left town with numerous outstanding bills -- has kept the unions from rising to their importance this Labor Day.
