Voters yesterday approved two annexation proposals that will result in the first major expansion of the Cape Girardeau city limits in 22 years; as a result of the vote, the city has annexed both lanes of Interstate 55 from about 2,000 feet north of the I-55 and U.S. 61 interchange between Cape Girardeau and Jackson, south to the Cape Girardeau County line, as well as the southbound lane of I-55 from the county line south to the municipal airport in Scott County.

Eastbound traffic was backed up across the Mississippi River bridge along Morgan Oak Street to South Sprigg yesterday; one lane of Illinois Route 146 had to be closed, while an asphalt overlay was poured between the bridge and East Cape Girardeau, Illinois.

Guest preachers will fill the pulpit at Centenary Methodist Church during the remainder of August, while the pastor, the Rev. J. Ray Trotter, is on vacation; preaching today is the Rev. Clyde E. Byrd, minister of education.

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Tom McAfee of Bridgeton, Missouri, wins the individual championship, while Cape Girardeau takes the team title in the Missouri Junior Golf Tournament; the Cape Girardeau team includes the same players who gained a tie with Mexico, Missouri, for the state high school championship last spring: Larry McLaird, Mike Gray, Jim Waltz and Mike Long.

Reassurance is given by a spokesman for the State Highway Commission that approximately $25,000 will be forthcoming this fall for construction of four miles of Route Z, a Cape Girardeau County farm-to-market road westward from near Gordonville and extending southwest from Zion Methodist Church.

An advance detachment of the National Guard, Service Section of Service Company, stationed here, departs by Frisco train in the afternoon for Camp Clark, which is at Nevada, Missouri; the Third Battalion Headquarters Company, also located here, and the Band Section, with headquarters at Chaffee, Missouri, will depart Sunday for the annual two-week encampment.

The men erecting the ornamental poles for the new "white way" system have discovered that the old wooden awnings on some buildings will interfere with their work; the old porch on the Prescott Hotel on Main Street will throw the lights out of alignment; the three large light polls are on arms 12 feet from the ground, the exact height of the hotel's porch; the globes will have to be lowered to accommodate the porch; the same trouble will be encountered on other old buildings, unless the law takes action.

The Cape Girardeau Capahas win two games from the Spaniards, defeating the New Madrid, Missouri, team 4-3 and 5-4.
