25 years ago: Aug. 9, 1981

The Rev. Kevin P. Popp was ordained and installed as a Lutheran pastor earlier this month at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Concordia, Mo.; Popp is the son of Kenneth Popp of Pocahontas and the late Verna Popp.

The Rev. Paul H. Jilg, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, presents his farewell sermon in each of the worship services held this weekend; Jilg has accepted a call to serve Grace Lutheran Church in Little Rock, Ark.

50 years ago: Aug. 9, 1956

Ray Clinton Contracting Co. of Sikeston, Mo., was the apparent low bidder for construction of the new school building for the Illmo R-1 School District; the new structure will be erected west of Ancell on a site adjoining Highway 61 and the highway which leads toward Chaffee, Mo.

Thieves enter the Blue Hole barbecue stand on South Sprigg Street during the night and carry off eight barbecued pork shoulders, beer and cigarettes; Ralph Brennecke is the proprietor of the establishment.

75 years ago: Aug. 9, 1931

The Rev. J.W. Ellis, pastor of Grace Methodist Church, delivers the message at the union worship service at Common Pleas Courthouse Park in the evening; his topic is "The Kingdom of God and the Church."

Hundreds of people attend the annual picnic given by the Lutheran Church at Gordonville; features of the day include two baseball games, a concert by the employees' band of the Marquette Cement Mfg. Co. and various types of amusements.

100 years ago: Aug. 9, 1906

Ben Juden leaves in the morning for Jefferson Barracks, where he will be sworn into the Army, if he passes the physical examination at the post; if he is successful, he will try for a commission as a second lieutenant.

L.J. Albert, president of Sturdivant Bank, undergoes a tonsorial change; he has his side whiskers shaved and only his mustache now remains; when he goes home in the evening, his family thinks their uncle, John F. Albert, is visiting from St. Louis.
