Missouri Sheriff's Association opens three-day convention at Holiday Inn in Cape Girardeau; annual gathering will continue through Saturday, with about 200 sheriffs and deputies from throughout Missouri in attendance.

Optimist Club Tot Lot named in honor of late Jack Wimp is dedicated at Cherokee Park; on hand for occasion are Dr. Mark F. Scully, former president of Southeast Missouri State University, and Dr. Bill Stacy, current interim president, neighbors and longtime friends of Wimp; Wimp was active member of Optimists, serving as Tot Lot chairman for many years and as president in 1954.

50 years ago: Aug. 9, 1954

Despite cutback in evening hours in June to offset dwindling revenues, Cape Transit Co., operator of city's transportation system, has found little change in its cost of operations per mile of routing.

Tribute for his many contributions to athletics in Cape Girar-deau and area is paid to C.P. Harris, who is moving to Memphis, Tenn., at dinner in his honor at Colony Club; star athlete in three sports as youth at Central High School and State College, Harris later coached some of finest teams in college's history.

75 years ago: Aug. 9, 1929

Steel bridge will be constructed over Cape LaCroix Creek in South Cape Girardeau to replace trestle now in use on main line of Frisco Railroad; wooden trestle, in use since line was constructed, was washed out by floods.

Cape Girardeau has second highest birth rate of any city in Missouri, according to figures covering year 1928, compiled and announced by State Board of Health; Cape Girardeau's birth rate for past year was 25.54 per 1,000 population; Independence was first with rate of 29.77 per 1,000 population.
