St. Louis - Ann B. Sherer of Houston, Texas, is first woman to be elected bishop in South Central Jurisdiction, and sixth elected in history of United Methodist Church; she has been assigned to Missouri as temporal and spiritual leader of state's more than 200,000 members in 993 churches of Missouri East and Missouri West conferences.

25 years ago: Aug. 9, 1977

Marquette Co. confirms it will build $80 million cement plant in Cape Girardeau, construction to start before end of year, and completion targeted for 1980; plant, which will have annual production capacity of one million tons of cement, will replace existing facility at same site.

Firmer guidelines and stricter staff supervision of "open house" policy in Southeast Missouri State University residence hall will be rule when students return for fall semester; President Robert E. Leestamper says abuses last year lead to reassessment of open house policy; in essence program permits males and females to visit in dorm rooms during prescribed hours, but not behind closed doors.

50 years ago: Aug. 9, 1952

C.A. Vandivort of Cape Girardeau has taken option on century-and-a-half-old Burfordville mill, owned by Cape County Milling Co.; Vandivort obtained 30-day option to buy which will terminate Aug. 31; his interest stems from relationship of his wife to mill's builder, Maj. George F. Bollinger; she is granddaughter six generations removed from Bollinger; Vandivort hopes state will purchase old mill for use as state park or historic attraction.

National Guard officers, replying to city's cancellation of organization's lease to Arena Building, have declared they couldn't see any justification for increase in rental and, in separate action, have proposed three sites in city parks as top choices for armory to better suit military needs.

75 years ago: Aug. 9, 1927

Farmers and their families from Cape Girardeau and surrounding counties assemble at Fairground Park for annual Farmers Day picnic sponsored by Chamber of Commerce; crowd estimated at between 2,500 and 3,000 people assemble at noon on hillside on west side of park, where program is presented.

Bartel's drapery annex, with entrance at 122 N. Frederick, has just opened to public; Octa Bollinger is in charge of shop and will make curtains to order.- Sharon K. Sanders
