St. Louis Mayor Vincent C. Schoemehl Jr. last night urged Southeast Missouri State University graduates to elevate their expectations and to approach life with optimism; the commencement speaker's younger sister, Loretta Schoemehl, was among the graduates.

William J. Withers Sr., whose roots in broadcasting took hold here, has returned to assume control of one of the area's oldest and largest communication companies; Withers, a network planner for Harris Communications of Mobile, Ala., for more than a decade, has purchased the assets of Withers Communication and is president of the firm, which he now calls W.J. Withers Communications Co.

1962

Jackson became a substantially larger city overnight, when voters Tuesday approved annexation of 625 acres and added an estimated 350 people to its population; the annexation, which had been opposed by those outside, was adopted by residents of the city, 512 for to 161 against.

Cape Girardeau businessman Clarence W. Suedekum won the Republican nomination for presiding judge of the county court in the only contested local race on a colorless primary election day Tuesday; he defeated a former member of the board, W.P. Crites of Friedheim.

1937

Sending their fleet craft at dizzy speeds over the race course, St. Louis amateur boat pilots sweep the outboard class of the first free Speedboat Regatta held on the Mississippi River before a crowd estimated at 10,000; Chester, Ill., entries top the two races in the runabout class, and Cape Girardeau's lone entry -- Dr. Paul Nussbaum -- fails to place.

Dr. John H. Harty of the Teachers College faculty is the speaker in the evening at the union service sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance; the service is held at Christ Evangelical Church.

Hirsch Brothers, the enterprising Haarig firm, has placed in service a new Ford delivery vehicle to care for its big city business.

Fred J. Courleux, former athletic director of the Normal School here, and now athletic director of the Birmingham, Ala., high schools, is spending a few days with friends in Cape Girardeau.
