The recent installation of a "CrimeStoppers" telephone tip line has already shown results, says police chief D. Ray Johnson; although declining to give specifics, Johnson says detectives have started an investigation as a result of information forwarded by a caller to the line.

Tim Schwent, 34, of Jackson, has been appointed treasurer of the U.S. Jaycees for the 1982-1983 fiscal year; he also serves on the Jaycee executive committee and on the executive board of directors.

50 years ago: Aug. 7, 1957

Seven students at State College will graduate with honors tomorrow night in the first summer commencement service in 29 years; graduating magna cum laude will be Edith Ames, William Johnson and John Scultz, and cum laude will be Daune Aubuchon, Bobby Jerrolds, Ronald Johnson and Mary Rhodes; there are 133 candidates for degrees.

Whether a tornado strikes or bombs fall, given sufficient warning, residents of Wittenberg, Mo., have two spacious shelters ready for use in an emergency; Richard Nennert, owner of two former beer cellars, offered their use to the town, and Mayor Ray Murray accepted.

75 years ago: Aug. 7, 1932

A large crowd attends the union service at Courthouse Park in the evening to hear the Rev. Robert L. Harrell speak on "Christian Opportunity"; part of the service is a 30-minute musical program presented by a combined choir under the direction of W.J. McBride of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church.

Paul Allen, 19 months old, son of Mr. And Mrs. C. Norvell, enjoys a day of play after tumbling from a second-floor porch at the family apartment, 705A Broadway, last night, landing on his head on the ground; a physician found nothing wrong with the child.

100 years ago: Aug. 7, 1907

The outside stairs of the Rodney building on Broadway are removed in the afternoon; from now on, the inner stairs will have to be used entirely.

Mrs. Eliza Gunter died Monday at her home, 536 S. Sprigg St., in Cape Girardeau, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 13 days; she raised a large family, and her descendants are many.
