Thad Bullock is winner; early Wednesday morning, final returns from 8th District pushed Bullock to top of six-candidate field for Democratic nomination, making him winner over James L. Thompson of Bourbon by 111-vote margin; for Bullock, who had never come close to capturing his party's nomination during races in 1968, 1984, 1986, 1988 and 1990, Wednesday was day of jubilation.
If Southeast Missouri State University administration has its way, institution would operate on $77.7 million budget next fiscal year; that's budget request that university officials propose to submit to Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education for fiscal 1994; Board of Regents will consider budget proposal when it meets today.

Youth from several district churches join forces to clear grounds of Historic Old McKendree Chapel near Jackson; the Rev. Jeff Marsh, superintendent of Cape Girardeau-Farmington District, enlisted help of young people to clean grounds and historic chapel for upcoming annual Old McKendree Day, Sept. 11; extensive refurbishing has taken place to restore shrine to its original 1819 condition.
Cairo, Ill. - Bridge work on Interstate 57 bridge across Mississippi River has continued despite Teamsters' strike that has shut down most of road building work in Southern Illinois; work on bridge project was stopped only one day.

Estimate for resurfacing 27 blocks of asphalt streets and surfacing for three graveled streets was ordered drawn up by city council yesterday; council indicated it would approve the numerous projects, all of which would be done under 60-cent tax bills assessed against abutting property owners, plus approximate $3,000 contribution from parking meters fund to underwrite cost of work above amount property owners would pay.
Sen. Albert Spradling Jr., serving unexpired term in state senate, will face opposition from Republican Tom Brown, Charleston attorney in his bid for re-election in November.
75 years ago: Aug. 6, 1927
Two men were arrested and 145 bottles of home brew beer and nearly three quarts of illicit whisky were seized in raid by county officers on "soft drink" stand on South Kingshighway near Frisco railway tracks yesterday; men, one from Cape Girardeau and other from Chaffee, were co-partners in established; they are lodged in Jackson county jail on charges of possessing intoxicating liquor.
County Judge Charles Sievers suffered three broken bones in his right foot Friday afternoon, when horse he was riding stumbled and fell on him; accident occurred near judge's home in north end of Cape Girardeau County.- Sharon K. Sanders
