1987

The Scott City Police Personnel Board said yesterday Scott City Mayor Alvie Modglin violated prescribed guidelines of the police ordinance when he fired chief Tom Eaton on June 30, and ordered that Eaton be reinstated with all back pay.

General Sign Co. has installed the new Show Me Center message board in front of the new structure; made by Daktronics of Brookings, S.D., the big electronic marquee was donated by the Coca-Cola Co.

1962

Concluding its sacred concert tour through parts of the United States and Central America, the Lutheran Chorus of Sheboygan, Wis., sings at all three morning services at Trinity Lutheran Church.

A group of about 50 people from the Old Appleton community travel to Cape Girardeau by train in the morning and then take a chartered bus tour of scenic points in and around the city; the group picnics at Trail of Tears State Park.

1937

The Cape Girardeau Street Department has closed Independence Street, between West End Boulevard and U.S. 61, as it prepares to pave the road with amiesite; cost of the project will be divided between the Cape Special Road District and property owners.

The program of a modern, reorganized chamber of commerce is placed before the community in the evening at a picnic and business meeting at Dennis Scivally Park; about 150 men attend, enjoying a fish fry and giving serious attention to the proposed plan of activity that the chamber presents.

1912

There is a report making the rounds that a traffic arrangement is to be made allowing the Iron Mountain Railroad to reach the Thebes, Ill., bridge connection by way of the Hoxie Branch of the Frisco from Poplar Bluff, Mo.; currently, the Iron Mountain uses the Cotton Belt tracks; according to the rumor, the Iron Mountain will run its trains from Poplar Bluff over the Hoxie to Gulf Junction at Cape Girardeau and then take the Gulf division of the Frisco to the bridge.

John Herbst plans to open up the Elks Buffet on Wednesday morning; it will be a first-class restaurant.
