Jackson - Longtime Cape Girardeau County Associate Commissioner Leonard F. Sander was defeated in Republican primary Tuesday; Sander, seeking his ninth two-year term on commission, lost to Larry Bock by margin of 267 votes; Bock will face George Cox in November, who was unopposed in Democratic primary.

U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson easily won Republican nomination for Missouri's 8th District congressional seat; but no winner had emerged late Tuesday night in tight race for Democratic nomination; in Democratic race, James "Jay" Thompson of Bourbon and retired Cape Girardeau businessman Thad Bullock were in virtual dead heat.

25 years ago: Aug. 5, 1977

Irvin H. Landewee, retail advertising manager of The Southeast Missourian, will assume duties as advertising director of Mexico Ledger at Mexico, Mo., Monday; Landewee has been employee of The Missourian for 19 years; before his employment with newspaper, he was engaged in construction business with his father and brother.

Advance - Voters will go to polls Tuesday to decide annexation proposal; if issue is successful, unincorporated area adjacent to and west of existing city limits will be taken into city; land includes the Industrial Park; there are no industries in proposed area of annexation, but there are several houses.

50 years ago: Aug. 5, 1952

Cape Girardeau County, with less than half its maximum of eligible voters exercising privilege of the ballot, settle several hot contests and went along with rest of Missouri in its majorities for winning state candidates in primary; most intense race on Republican ticket, for prosecuting attorney, is won by incumbent, Raymond H. Vogel, who defeats Robert G. Brady, present county representative.

Benton - John Dennis edges out Sheriff Early Malcolm for Democratic nomination for sheriff of Scott County by 297 votes; that is tantamount to election in Democratic Scott County.

75 years ago: Aug. 5, 1927

Prof. H.O. Anderson, who for past four years has been instructor in modern language department at Teachers College, will leave with his wife and their six children Monday to motor to their new home in Waynesburg, Pa., where he has accepted position as head of modern language department in Waynesburg College.

Amusement company, with 10 shows and six rides, will furnish part of entertainment at Cape Fair this year; W.F.D. Batjer, secretary of fair association, says contract has been signed with Strayer Amusement Co., for its shows to exhibit here during fair; Merrell Acrobatic Troupe will also appear at fair.
