1987

For the second time in a year, Cape Girardeau voters reject a tax proposal to improve city streets; however, a proposed "sunset" clause on the city's motel and restaurant gross receipts tax is approved; unofficial vote totals show the half-cent transportation sales tax proposal falls by a vote of 2,120 to 1,788.

The Rev. Jerry Falwell makes a brief stop here to meet with Cape Girardeau businessman Jerry Lipps, a longtime friend of Falwell who was recently appointed to the reorganized PTL board of directors; Falwell says "the immediate crisis is over" for PTL.

1962

Alfred A. Jones, who has served as treasure of the Cape County Association for Retarded Children since its incorporation in 1958, has been elected its president for the coming year.

The Cape Girardeau area's first heavy rain since June 24 falls in the afternoon, dumping .84 of an inch of moisture and doing light damage here; hail does some crop damage in Perry County.

1937

In a brief morning ceremony, ground is broken at John S. Cobb School for a new auditorium-gymnasium; those present include board members, WPA officials, and about 125 members of the black community; turning the first shovel of earth is Edgar "Bud" Goins, a graduate of the school.

Playing in a foursome on the Country Club course, E.R. "Abe" Stuber, coach of athletics at the Teachers College, shoots a hole-in-one; his feat is the third of record at the local course and comes on Hole No. 5, which has a drive of 160 yards; playing with Stuber are Albert M. Spradling, Cape Girardeau attorney, and Ralph Walker of East St. Louis, Ill., and Theodore Short of St. Louis, also attorneys.

1912

The big Harris-Parkinson Stock Co. arrives here by train from Marion, Ill., where the show played to capacity houses for the past week; in the evening, the company will present "Two Americans Abroad," in addition to vaudeville specials; the tent show is playing on the Whitelaw lot.

The Rev. and Mrs. Charles E. Maltas and their two daughters returned from their vacation in the North yesterday, and Maltas resumes his pulpit at Christ Episcopal Church.
