PATTON, Mo. -- A parking lot and access drive in Patton used for the last 100 years were closed during the weekend, angering residents of this small community; the property was purchased at auction by a Perryville, Mo., man; over the weekend he erected a barricade, closing off an area that has been considered community property.

An estimated 350 district football fans attended a free barbecue last night sponsored by the State College's Boosters Club; fans were on hand from Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Chaffee, Mo., Perryville, Mo., Sikeston, Mo., Charleston, Mo., Poplar Bluff, Mo., Dexter, Mo., Kennett, Mo., Delta, St. Louis, Anna, Ill., and one -- Bill Parker -- from Augusta, Ga.

A parked car owned by Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Crabtree is extensively damaged at Jackson when a railroad car jumps the rails at the end of a spur and collides with the parked vehicle.

McCarthy Bros. Construction Co. of St. Louis is the low bidder on a proposal to build a new library and museum building at Teachers College; McCarthy also is erecting the new Saint Francis Hospital addition here.

Workers begin removing the old concrete floor preparatory to replacing it with a new one in the larger of two rooms of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department headquarters; the floor will contain a drain so trucks may be washed inside; members of the department and WPA workers are doing the work.

1913

Jackson Homecomers is beginning to wind down; aviator George A. Rawson had bad luck again yesterday; he hadn't gone more than 15 or 20 feet in the air, when he noticed his engine wasn't working correctly; suddenly the machine dropped to the ground and smashed into a wire fence, demolishing the propeller and otherwise injuring the plane; Rawson was uninjured and promises to fly again today.

The first shipment of ice cream by mail ever heard of here is sent out on the noon train; I. Ben Miller sends a half gallon, stored in a can made on the order of a thermos bottle, to Charles McMullin and family at Sikeston, Mo., by parcel post.
