Firefighters from Cape Girardeau, Jackson and several rural fire districts pumped 3.5 to 4 million gallons of water into the north lake at the County Park in an effort to aerate the water there and keep the fish alive; about 500 large channel catfish, bass and perch were killed during the sudden oxygen depletion that occurred Friday morning at the new south fishing lake at the park.

Dr. Carl T. Train, a biology professor, will be honored as the winner of the 1986 Faculty Merit Award at a banquet during Southeast Missouri State University's Homecoming Weekend Oct. 10 through 12.

50 years ago: Aug. 30, 1961

The Missouri Park Board has authorized an expenditure of $9,000 for a warning system and a crossing over the Frisco tracks at Trail of Tears State Park for a boat launching ramp; the crossing will be at Moccasin Springs.

Leon Morton, a Jackson city electrical worker, escaped with his life yesterday when his fellow worker, Jerry McDowell, knocked him free from a live primary wire; Morton was on the platform of a ladder truck and McDowell was working on a pole; they had disconnected service on the lines they were changing and each knew where the primary wires were, but in some manner Morton touched a live wire.

75 years ago: Aug. 30, 1936

A.H. Stellhorn is formally installed at the morning worship service at Trinity Lutheran Church as a teacher at Trinity Lutheran Parochial School; he comes here from Davenport, Iowa where he was teacher in a Lutheran school for the past five years.

The Rev. W.E. Hicks preaches his farewell sermon in the evening as pastor of Red Star Baptist Church; he and his wife are moving to East St. Louis, Ill., where he will become pastor of Franklin Park Baptist Church.

100 years ago: Aug. 30, 1911

William H. White, for eight years in charge of the Cape Telephone Co.'s wires and apparatus in the capacity of assistant manager, has been named superintendent of buildings and grounds for the Normal School.

Mr. and Mrs. Lum Sing last night gave an informal reception at their home on Broadway; the sidewalk in front of their laundry and residence was crowded with the curious who, for the most part, had never seen a Chinese woman before.
