The apparent low bidders on some 20 construction packages for the Southeast Missouri State University multipurpose building total $13.4 million, say university officials; some adjustments will have to be made in the specifications to bring the project within its $16.5 million budget.

Assessed valuation for Cape Girardeau County stands at $370,769,419, a 47.4 percent increase from 1984.

The Cape Girardeau City Council yesterday unequivocally rejected passage of a length-of-service pay increase for firemen and in a counter-proposal set up a seven-member citizens' committee to study a means of financing higher pay for all city employees.

Cape Girardeau's 9-year-old Federal Housing Authority was formally reinstated by the City Council yesterday by passage of a resolution citing its necessity and appointment of a successor five-member body to the original authority; named to the board were Vinson Rueseler, Max G. Stovall, Walter H. Oberheide, A.W. Zimmer and Mrs. Lindsay W. Simmons.

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Dave Gayman and Roy Hamilton are executed by hanging shortly after daybreak in a stockade near the county jail; they pay the supreme penalty for the slaying of Arthur Cashion in a holdup at a filling station south of here on Christmas Even, 1933.

The public square in Jackson was filled last night, as were the streets for a block in three directions, as a happy throng celebrated Children's Day at Homecomers; the Aerial Lorenzos had the crowd transfixed, as they performed death-defying stunts 100 feet above the ground.

J.W. Lackey, representing the Talge Mohagany Co. of Indianapolis, is in Cape Girardeau to see about a location for his plant; management of the company seems anxious to locate here, because of Cape Girardeau's favorable position as to transportation facilities.

Work on a new steamer to be placed in the Alton, Ill.-St. Louis trade by the Eagle Packet Co. started in the shipyards at Jeffersonville, Ind., yesterday; the steamer, which will replace the sunken steamer Cape Girardeau, will be 160 feet long and will be built for speed.
