Drop in public school enrollment in Cape Girardeau this year is expected to be nearly 1,000 from peak year of 1969-70, when 5,664 pupils were on rolls; enrollment today in nine public school totals 4,597, which is 226 less than total of year ago at comparable time.
Unsolved murder two months ago of Lt. Mary Ann James of Daleville, Ala., has brought that city's police chief and detective and Alabama Bureau of Investigation officer to Cape Girardeau to follow up leads in investigation; trio arrived Monday and are interviewing James' family members and friends.
50 years ago: Aug. 30, 1952
Cape Girardeau boy, Joseph P. Russell, 19, was aboard Navy tug, Sarsi, which struck mine 3 miles off Korean cost on Wednesday and sank within 20 minutes; based on Navy announcement giving names of dead, missing and seriously wounded, Russell, seaman second class, is believed to have escaped.
Dragline operator was injured yesterday when his machine toppled into ditch near proposed intersection of William street and Kingshighway; operator, Jim Sheldon, 60, of Neelyville, was taken to St. Francis Hospital with severe bruises of back, but apparently no other injuries.
75 years ago: Aug. 30, 1927
Floor of Bohnsack Clothing Co. store on Main street, which became badly warped during high water last week, has been taken up and re-laid; new floor was put in on one side, and entire surface is being scraped; wood is hard maple and quite durable; after varnishing and waxing, floor will greatly enhance appearance of store.
Sikeston - Location of Highway 61 through Scott and New Madrid counties over proposed "west route" would result in Cape Girardeau losing the primary highway, former Congressman Ralph E. Bailey declares at meeting of Kingshighway Association, which favors retaining Kingshighway as route for north-south road; at same time, spirited meeting of West Route Association is conducted at Morehouse, with number of leading citizens of Southeast Missouri speaking in favor of that route.
