Fueled by high-profile race for governor and heated races for local offices, voter turnout in Tuesday's primary is expected to be high; among those running for governor are Republicans State Treasure Wendell Bailey, Secretary of State Roy Blunt and Attorney General William Webster, and Democrats Lt. Gov. Mel Carnahan and St. Louis Mayor Vince Schoemehl.

Renters in Cape Girardeau are having hard time finding places to live, result of what city officials and realtors are calling an apartment shortage; pinch will be felt even more when students begin looking for housing as they return for fall semester at Southeast Missouri State University.

25 years ago: Aug. 3, 1977

Chaffee - Chaffee man is asphyxiated and his wife is seriously injured when flames engulf their frame home early in morning; dead is Claude Wilhite, 49 years old; his wife, Ann, 52, is in serious condition at Chaffee General Hospital with burns on her arms and back.

Another skirmish in running battle city has been waging for at least two years over sewer installations is fought before city council; this time it pertains to subdivision off Bloomfield Road, where one group of property owners is trying to stop project because of cost; it figures out at six cents a square foot which runs up tidy sum to owners with large tracts.

50 years ago: Aug. 3, 1952

Glenn Hitt, former Sunday School superintendent at local Church of the Nazarene has accepted church at Ogden, Ill., and will assume his duties as pastor on Aug. 11; announcement has also been made that Harold Fleshman, who has been in Olivet Nazarene College past three years, has accepted church at Effingham, Ill.; he is son of the Rev. and Mrs. C.E. Fleshman of Cape Girardeau.

Repair work will begin Monday at West Side Church of God, which was damaged by fire June 24; the Rev. H.G. Earl, pastor, says some carpenters will be hired to help restore building, but bulk of labor will be done by members of church.

75 years ago: Aug. 3, 1927

Judge Oscar A. Knehans in Common Pleas Court orders sale of Cape Girardeau Northern Railroad at public auction on Sept. 12; sale was requested by George W. Cross, co-receiver of road, who was named as special master to conduct sale; short line road, which has been in receivership more than 10 years, will be offered for sale in its entirety, or in six separate parcels; sale of any part must be approved by court.

Group of orchardists from Cape Girardeau and Scott counties visits number of orchards and strawberry fields in Scott County in tour arranged by County Agent A.J. Renner; one of features of tour is visit to Mary Jane peach orchard near Blodgett, where demonstrations in grading and packing fruit for shipments are given.
