25 years ago: Aug. 29, 1983

Southeast Missouri State University's new policy of permitting students to park on nearby city streets has prompted complaints from some property owners about cars being parked in front of their homes.

Bids for trees to be planted at the Common Pleas Courthouse in Cape Girardeau are accepted by the county court; nine companies bid to plant the trees or put in metal grating to surround them.

50 years ago: Aug. 29, 1958

The Howard-Swan Jets depart for St. Joseph, where they will compete as defending champions in the 25th annual Missouri State Softball Tournament over the weekend; members of the team are Eugene McFarland, John Reed, Tom Ressell, Joe Gleason, John Watkins, Richard Volkerding, Bob Goodwin, Allen Sherry, Gordon McBride, Gilbert Logel, Jack Burris, Bob Clark, Bob Miller and Richard Brockmire; team manager is Clifford Irwin, and bat boy is Bobby Clark.

Mr. and Mrs. Juel Mosley move from 1433 Bessie St. to 1007 N. Henderson Ave., a residence they purchased from Professor and Mrs. Glenn A. McConkey.

75 years ago: Aug. 29, 1933

New matrons for the two Teachers College dormitories have been appointed by the board of regents; Mrs. J.B. Stubblefield of Cape Girardeau was selected as the matron for Leming Hall, succeeding Lula Eicholtz, and Mrs. Ernest K. Blue of Poplar Bluff, Mo., was named matron of Albert Hall, succeeding Ella L. Hutton.

The Cape Girardeau City Council votes to accept the bid of the Burns-McDonnell Engineering Co. of Kansas City to make a preliminary survey to determine the cost and revenue of a municipal electric light plant.

100 years ago: Aug. 29, 1908

The sale of lots in the Third Giboney-Houck Addition to the city will close later today; Louis Houck has withdrawn an entire block from the sale, leaving only about 40 lots; when he saw that the lots would bring only a small price, he decided to withdraw the block on the west side of the property and will make it into a park for the children of the neighborhood.

Mr. and Mrs. Jeptha Riggs leave for Cambridge, Mass., where he will attend Harvard this year.
