Charles Mangels of Oak Ridge and his Belgian draft horses took first place in the Unicorn Hitch and Four Horse Draft competitions at the DuQuoin State Fair in DuQuoin, Ill.; he also took second place in the Pair of Draft Horses Hitched competition.

Mrs. Frederic A. Groves, past president-general of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a longtime worker for patriotic and civic causes, died yesterday at age 90.

50 years ago: Aug. 28, 1961

Ground was broken Sunday for the substructure of the future church building for the congregation of St. Andrew Lutheran Church; turning the first spade of earth for the $34,000 structure was Chester L. Wallis, head of the building committee.

Construction work has been completed and only painting remains to be done on a new bridge built by the Cape Special Road District on the old Jackson-Bainbridge Road at Egypt Mills; the bridge, built under contract by the Harrison-Rickard Construction Co., cost $13,800.

75 years ago: Aug. 28, 1936

The end of the terrific heat wave that has left Girardeans and thousands of others wilted under its record-breaking duration is in sight, with cooling blasts from both the north and west due to sweep in tonight or early tomorrow; unfortunately, there is little rain in sight.

A building permit has been issued by the city engineer to the Rev. B.L. Patrick of the Missionary Baptist Church to build a temporary tabernacle at the northeast corner of Elm and Benton streets; the building, 30 by 50 feet, will be frame and will cost an estimated $200.

100 years ago: Aug. 28, 1911

Mrs. G.W. Bahn and daughters Anna and Lillian return from Denver, where they have been spending the summer.

It is learned through St. Louis newspapers that the Rev. Eugene F. Abbott, pastor of the Cape Girardeau Presbyterian church, has been called by the congregation of the Fulton, Mo., church to fill the pulpit there.
