25 years ago: Aug. 28, 1982

Merchants and shoppers on Broadway in downtown Cape Girardeau yesterday were confronted with an unusual sight when more than 30 Southeast Missouri farmers, all members of the American Agriculture Movement, drove their tractors to the offices of 8th District Rep. Bill Emerson and his Democratic challenger Jerry Ford; the farmers, demonstrating the economic plight of American agriculture, parked their tractors in the 300 and 400 blocks of Broadway when they arrived, and left them there overnight.

Trish Heisserer of Kelso, Mo., was selected to reign over Scott City's sixth annual Mid-summer Festival activities Friday; she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Heisserer.

50 years ago: Aug. 28, 1957

Officers of the State Highway Patrol will start keeping a closer eye on the speed of motorists on district highways after midnight tonight, when the state's first speed law becomes effective; maximum speed on federal divided highways is 70 miles per hour under the new law; on undivided federal highways, the speed limit will be 70 miles per hour by day and 65 at night; the speed limits on all other roads and highways will be 65 miles per hour during the day and 60 at night.

Patricia Gremminger of Desloge, Mo., is crowned Miss Homecomers of 1956 at festivities in Jackson.

75 years ago: Aug. 28, 1932

The 15th anniversary of the pastorate of the Rev. Reinhart Lehmann is observed in the morning at Christ Evangelical Church; Lehmann has enjoyed the longest period of service with his congregation of any protestant minister now a pastor in Cape Girardeau.

The last of a series of union meetings for the summer season is held in the evening at Courthouse Park; the Rev. F.L. Willshire, pastor of New McKendree Methodist Church at Jackson, delivers the sermon.

100 years ago: Aug. 28, 1907

The excursion given by the Eastern Stars last evening on the steamer Cape Girardeau is said by officers of the boat to be the largest that vessel ever took out of the city; there were considerably more than 400 persons on the excursion.

Mrs. A. Dittlinger, Mrs. G.C. Thilenius and party return from a visit to Eureka Springs, Ark.
