Cape Girardeau Board of Education yesterday hired architectural firm in next step toward its goal to build new school facilities; board approved contract with The Christner Partnership, Inc., of St. Louis to help district formulate its facilities plan; board has set April 1993 date to present building proposal to voters for approval.

First major capital campaign in Southeast Missouri State University's history raised more than $28.5 million, exceeding its goal by 14 percent; 5-year "New Vision of Excellence" campaign officially ended June 30; campaign raised $28,568,394 in gifts, donations and pledges, well above $25 million goal that had been set.

25 years ago: Aug. 28, 1977

Program director for Council on Ministries of Missouri East Conference of United Methodist Church, Dr. Gregory Poole, is guest minister at Centenary United Methodist Church at morning worship service; Poole has served numerous pastorates in Missouri, including Liberty, Mexico and St. John's United Methodist in St. Louis.

Third anniversary of Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church and its minister's service to congregation is celebrated beginning at morning worship with guest speaker Dr. R.O. Woodworth, who is business manager for Baptist Bible College at Springfield; church began with 37 members and has grown to average of 175 in attendance each week for Sunday School; pastor is the Rev. Jack Strickland.

50 years ago: Aug. 28, 1952

Rent controls will be continued until April 30 if city council follows recommendations of new Rent Control Advisory Board; board, at its first business meeting last night, voted in favor of continued controls; decision came after 2 hours, 15 minutes of discussion.

City Commissioner of Public Works Louis Brune says he may continue in his present post until jobs now under contract are completed, if plan to provide engineering can be worked out before Monday; he doesn't elaborate on plan; Brune earlier said he would submit his resignation before end of month; action followed resignation of John Walther, city engineer, in dispute over pay raise.

75 years ago: Aug. 28, 1927

The Rev. G.A. Crocker, for past two years pastor of Red Star Baptist Church, delivers his farewell sermons to congregation; he will move his family Wednesday to Blodgett, where he has accepted pastorate of Blodgett and Diehlstadt churches; Crocker, while pastor of Red Star, has enjoyed great success; since coming here, indebtedness against congregation has been lifted, and addition, increasing church's seating capacity, has been constructed.

About 250 members and friends of First Christian Church attend annual outdoor services, held at I.R. Kelso farm on North Sprigg Street road; church services are held at farm, following Sunday School at church; affair is held in woods about 200 yards beyond Kelso bungalow.
