1963

The Cape Girardeau City Council yesterday blanketed about 1,800 acres of the city's outer rim with single-family residence zoning to correct a previous oversight; the territory that was zoned was annexed to the city in 1958.

The Cape Girardeau School Board approves floor plans drawn by architect Fred A. Dormeyer Jr. for the remodeling of the old junior high school; the plans call for the conversion of some areas, elimination of outdated mechanical facilities and better access between the original building and the annex.

1938

A contract has been awarded and work will begin Monday on a program of complete modernization of the Broadway Theater; the interior will be redecorated and reseated, the lobby will be modernized, and a new, modernistic "V"-type marquee will be installed.

The purchase of the Southeast Missouri Packing Co., including all of the company's property and equipment, by the Pipkin-Boyd-Neal Packing Co. of Joplin, Mo., is announced by George W. Neal, president of the firm; the purchase is made from Mary Sebek, widow of the founder, Anton Sebek, who died last year.

1913

Jackson experienced two distinct shocks yesterday; the first was a fist fight between two residents, right on the street, with an interested circle of spectators; the fight was called a draw; the second shock came in the afternoon, when the first "slit skirt" ever seen in Jackson was paraded around on Main and High streets.

Dr. C.E. Schuchert's reorganized band gets busy in the evening and presents a grand concert on the courthouse square; the Campfire Girls sell ice cream to the large, delighted crowd.
