ST. LOUIS -- A 22-year-old St. Louis man was found guilty yesterday of five counts of fraternity hazing in series of beatings that left one pledge -- Michael Davis -- dead; convicted in St. Louis Circuit Court was Keith Allen.

Teri Froemsdorf, daughter of Missouri State trooper James Froemsdorf, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in 1985, is following in her dad's footsteps; she was among seven candidates sworn in yesterday as reserve officer with Cape Girardeau Police Reserve.

25 years ago: Aug. 27, 1979

A 21-year-old Cape Girardeau County jail inmate who escaped from jail in Jackson yesterday morning was apprehended in afternoon by Cape Girardeau police and returned to county jail; he is first person to have escaped from new county jail since it opened in May.

Hundreds of Southeast Missouri State University students brave long lines to enroll in fall semester classes; line winds its way through University Center, ending at ballroom, where advisers counsel enrolling students, mostly freshmen, and help them arrange their class schedules.

Cold front expected to reach Cape Girardeau last night and bring end to hot spell failed to materialize; forecasts indicate continuation of warm and humid weather; cold front, extending across Missouri, reaches only central part of state.

Debate on location of proposed National Guard armory continues; Guard officials have objected to placing armory on southwest corner of Arena Park at junction of Gordonville Road and East Rodney Drive; in order to make site acceptable, city would be required to cut down East Rodney road grade by five feet and use dirt to fill part of needed property.

75 years ago: Aug. 27, 1929

By noon tomorrow it will be determined if John Philip Sousa and his band will play in Cape Girar-deau Sept. 14; several committees are hoping to collect $750 to finance concerts here.

Work will begin this week on tearing out organ at Presbyterian Church on Broadway, in preparation for its replacement with $5,500 Kilger semi-unified, two-manual organ, which women's auxiliary of church is purchasing.
