The 8th District political committees select officers; Jackson lawyer Kevin Phillips is re-elected to a third term as head of the Republican district committee, while Poplar Bluff, Mo., banker Gene Shain wins a second term as Democratic chairman.

50 years ago: Aug. 26, 1961

Cape Special Road District during the summer months expects to clear areas to its new land acquired for park use at the Bloomfield Road-Benton Road intersection; the heavily forested acreage will be kept as much as possible as it is; underbrush will be cleared out, but no trees will be cut unless necessary.

A local young man, Marine Cpl. Joseph Lee Mirgeaux Jr., has received word of his appointment to the Naval Academy; Mirgeaux is spending a two-week leave here with his parents, after which he will report to the Naval Preparatory School at Bainbridge, Md., for six months of study.

75 years ago: Aug. 26, 1936

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- This community yesterday laid the cornerstone of its new high school and community gymnasium and recreation center; officers of the Grand Lodge of the Masonic order of Missouri officiated at the ceremonies.

Paving is started on the 17-mile stretch of Highway 25 between Jackson and Old Appleton; the first cement will be put down between Fruitland and Jackson, materials having been stockpiled near Fruitland; 70 laborers are ordered out by the National Re-Employment Office to work on the road.

100 years ago: Aug. 26, 1911

Mrs. Irma Houck Juden, 35, dies in the morning, the end coming suddenly and unexpectedly; she was the daughter of Louis Houck and the wife of Charles Juden.

At the end of the first week of fundraising, more than $1,400 has been subscribed to the aviation fund for bringing Capt. Thomas Baldwin and his flying machine to Cape Girardeau for the fair; $1,800 is needed to help pay the aviator's costs.
