25 years ago: Aug. 25, 1983

Local telephone company workers remain on strike after negotiations concerning a new contract with Southwestern Bell in St. Louis break off shortly after midnight; Southwestern Bell is one of seven companies nationwide that hasn't reached agreement with the Communications Workers of America.

Elementary pupils in kindergarten through sixth grade are dismissed early from Cape Girardeau public schools because of the intense heat; secondary students are dismissed at the regular time.

50 years ago: Aug. 25, 1958

A flotilla of 25 boats from Honkers Boat Club at Cape Girardeau participated in a Mississippi riverfront dedication program yesterday at Chester, Ill., an event planners estimate was attended by between 10,000 to 15,000 people.

The Rev. Guy L. Steele, pastor of First Christian Church in Cape Girardeau, has announced his decision to accept the pastorate of Broadview Christian Church outside Kansas City.

75 years ago: Aug. 25, 1933

The entire paved road on Route 146 between Cape Girardeau and Anna, Ill., opens to traffic; the bridge at Cape Girardeau is now the only crossing between St. Louis and Memphis, Tenn., with paved roads on both sides of the river.

There is a possibility of retaining St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau, the Rev. George O'Malley, president of the college, told the Optimist Club last night; plans are being made to build a new college in Northern Illinois, which will result in the closing of the local school; however, O'Malley said if it could be shown that St. Vincent's College would be accorded more support and that certain improvements could be made, it might be possible to retain the old school.

100 years ago: Aug. 25, 1908

The auction sale of lots in the Third Giboney-Houck Addition to the city will be held tomorrow afternoon; the addition is in a part of town that is most convenient for the working man, and the business man will find it most attractive on account of its surroundings.

The big ditchdigger used for constructing Cape Girardeau's sewer system broke a cog while on Broadway yesterday and has been laid up all day as a result.
