50 years ago: Aug. 26, 1957

The first instance of polio in Southeast Missouri, in which the patient had received the full series of three vaccinations, is reported by the Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis; the 13-year-old Charleston, Mo., boy is being treated at the polio center at St. Francis Hospital.

A spokesman for the Wayne Knitting Mills plant at Jackson says employment of 22 men in the seamless knitting department was terminated Saturday because of the company's "inability to get satisfactory results"; women operators will be substituted.

75 years ago: Aug. 26, 1932

The Old Appleton Brewery, twice raided by prohibition agents in three months, is locked today by the management; whether padlock proceedings will be sought by the government against the brewery hasn't been learned, after St. Louis agents paid a surprise visit Wednesday and dumped thousands of gallons of allegedly high-test beer into Apple Creek; six men, said to be working there at the time, were arrested.

John King and sons, Jimmie and Dale, owners of the Farmers Supply Co. feed store at 500 Independence, are closing out their stocks of feed and seed.

100 years ago: Aug. 26, 1907

Loos Bros.' sawmill in Jackson was destroyed yesterday by fire; a total loss, with the exception of the boilers in the engine room, was sustained, amounting to about $3,000; with the assistance of Jackson citizens, it is understood, the mill will be rebuilt.

H.R. McNeely, formerly of Fruitland, but now connected with a threshing machine company at Peoria, Ill., is in Cape Girardeau with Price Mathews of Fruitland; he has been away for four years.
