1987

After several years of planning and discussion and months of construction, Cape Girardeau County's administrative office building is complete; officials and employees are basically moved and settled in at the new Jackson facility.

Dr. Jack Kinder, executive secretary of the Missouri State Teachers Association, says Girardeans have a double obligation to support education by supporting both the local school district's tax increase measure and the association's tax increase measure; Kinder is here to launch a petition drive to place the MSTA initiative on the ballot.

1962

A 20-day drought and a five-day heat wave ended at about the same time yesterday afternoon with the arrival of cooler air and moisture-laden clouds; while the abrupt change in weather was welcomed by the sufferers of high temperatures and by farmers, it was accompanied by an electrical storm that interrupted power in parts of Cape Girardeau.

ST. LOUIS -- The FBI, on orders from Washington, has sent agents to Stoddard County to investigate alleged vote frauds in the primary election Aug. 7.

1937

Gov. Lloyd C. Stark and Attorney General Roy McKittrick, in a letter to Prosecuting Attorney Edward L. Drum, congratulates the prosecutor and county officers for having Cape Girardeau County free of slot machines and similar gambling devices; a study by the State Highway Patrol recently studied all the counties of the state as to gambling devices.

The Electric Supply Co. begins replacing the old electric lighting system at Common Pleas Courthouse, three men working on the project; the County Court is having the entire second floor and the county clerk's office on the first floor rewired, and modern lighting fixtures and switches will be installed.

1912

The Rev. George S. Meyer, who has been pastor of the Lutheran congregation at Egypt Mills the past three years, preaches his farewell sermon; next week he will leave for his new field of labor in Ohio.

Katherine Johnson, daughter of the Rev. A.C. Johnson of Fulton, Mo., is in the city, the guest of her aunts, Mrs. Allan Hinchey and Mrs. Thomas F. Lane; she will remain several weeks.
