James M. Hunt is inducted as vicar of Lutheran Chapel of Hope at Southeast Missouri State University for 1992-93 academic year; induction service is held in evening at chapel, corner of College Hill Place and North Pacific; Hunt will also serve at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel, under supervision of the Rev. William A. Matzat.
Three men are injured early in morning when someone shoots into crowd in 400 block of Good Hope; police say the three sustained minor injuries; there are no suspects in shooting.

Neither is official, but Southeast Missouri State University may have set two records yesterday; first is for enrollment; first-day figures stand at 8,071, just 15 shy of last year's total; enrollment is continuing and is projected to reach 8,400; second record came in evening, when 800 gallons of ice cream, topped with five gallons of chocolate syrup and three gallons of cherries, made up concoction that may be world's largest sundae.
Tamms, Ill. - Concerted push by Tamms-Olive Branch Chamber of Commerce for location of one of Illinois' two proposed new medium-security prisons, near here, has received blessings of Alexander County Commission; chamber is promoting 465-acre site northwest of Tamms presently owned by Alton Box Board Co., of Alton, Ill.

Approval has been given for Gulf Refining Co. to build large oil bulk plant west of Kingshighway and near Missouri Pacific switch line; it will be on Leming tract, north of Gordonville road; storage tanks will be 18,000 gallons in capacity; tanks and warehouse will be built at cost of $55,000.
Benton - Scott County Farm Agent Tom B. Stroup is negotiating with hay growers and dealers in Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska for information on hay available to relieve shortage in Southeast Missouri; Thursday 52 livestock and dairy farmers in Scott County, with three from New Madrid County, met at Benton and expressed need for hay for winter forage and desire to buy northern hay; local hay harvest was decimated by drought.
75 years ago: Aug. 23, 1927
Grading and bridging of permanent route of Highway 61 in vicinity of Cape Girardeau will begin Monday if weather conditions are favorable, says spokesman for Richmond Construction Co. of Advance, successful bidder for work recently allotted by state highway commission; Richmond concern has contract for portion known as Section B, which is part southwest of Cape Girardeau, while Service Construction Co. of Poplar Bluff has Section A, from Williams Creek southeast toward Cape Girardeau.
The 1928 convention of Missouri department of American Legion will be held in Cape Girardeau next August; this is decided at close of annual convention at Nevada, Mo.
