A dirt slide around the new dock facility at the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority at Scott City has been repaired; the dock is within 30 days of completion; it is located along the 1,800-foot slackwater harbor which was finished over a year ago.

Dr. Dorothy Feir, a professor of the department of biology at St. Louis University, and representatives of both local hospitals announce a research project on Lyme disease in this area; it will be funded by a $26,000 grant from the hospitals.

1964

The success of the new Teenage Center, operated by the youngsters themselves with adult guidance, has been so phenomenal it drove them from their Themis Street quarters last night; with more than 300 teens participating, there was fear the floor might not be strong enough; so the dancing was moved to the parking lot of First National Bank.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stokes and daughter have moved here from Carbondale, Illinois, and are living in a new apartment building at 719 William St.; Stokes will manage Cousin Fred's, a new discount center at Kingshighway and Bloomfield, now being stocked in readiness for the opening some time next week.

The residents of the Smelterville suburb have petitioned the city to provide "adequate police protection in Ward 10," and that it "establish a police beat" there.

The appearance of the name of famed English writer William Shakespeare, cut in stone around the top of the new library building at Teachers College, has caused considerable comment, not by just the fact of its being there, but because of the way it's spelled; it appears as "Shakspere," one of the accepted ways of spelling the name; the names of other famed literary men are also cut in the library stone.

1914

The bankrupt sale of the stock and property of David A. Glenn occurs on the front steps of Common Pleas Courthouse in the afternoon, a crowd of around 200 businessmen attending; in addition to stocks from various companies, a number of pieces of property are also sold.

Professor C.P. Coley returns from Vanduser, Missouri, and other points along the Gulf line, where he has been advertising the Cape Girardeau business college.
