CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Ralph Mattocks has sold his Chaffee Signal, a weekly newspaper, to Bob Kielhofner, 27, of Chaffee, but will remain with the paper six months; Mattocks' father, C.E. Mattocks, published the Signal from 1910 to 1924, when the son became the owner.

The Corning Theater building at Corning, Ark., leased by Robert Wilson and Edwin L. Kies of Jackson, was destroyed by fire last night; the two opened the theater about seven months ago after leasing the building from Mary Ware of Corning and spent about $14,000 remodeling it.
Efforts to have the city council reconsider its recent action overturning a merit system ordinance have been dropped by the League of Women Voters; although the league still maintains its stand on employing public workers on a basis of merit rather than under the spoils system, the local issue has been abandoned, at least for now.
Girardeans are happy with the 2 1/2 inches of rain they received overnight, when two storms passed over the city; the rainfall was the largest the city has received since the spring; the last rain of any consequence was July 12, when 2.10 inches fell.
The Cape Girardeau School Board is arranging to give Professor John Cobb, at Lincoln School, an opportunity to make a record for himself this year; work benches and a complete set of tools for a manual training course will be installed at Lincoln next week; Cobb has long complained that about the only tool he had to work with in his manual training department was his jack knife.
