Thunderstorms yesterday and today apparently have broken the weeklong heat wave that has scorched the Midwest, but not before taking its toll; two deaths in Cape Girardeau have been linked to the hot temperatures.
The second annual Schnucks Food Fair kicks off at the Show Me Center and will continue tomorrow afternoon; organizers say attendance at the two-day event could exceed last year's count of 55,000.
Projecting an enrollment of 6,525 by 1971-1972, as compared to the estimated 4,734 enrollment this year, it is predicted Cape Girardeau will need to build two new elementary schools and expand its secondary school facilities in the next eight years.
The Jackson City Council hears Mayor Larry A. Nowak explain some of the recommendations for the proposed bond issue to finance a building for the Lee-Rowan Co.; recommendations call for the $430,000 to be raised by $180,000 in revenue bonds and $250,000 in general obligation bonds.
The Red Hot Coal Co. has secured a permit to add an office at the front of a building on North Main Street, which O.E. Statler of the company recently purchased from John Tlapek Jr. of St. Marys, Mo.; the five-story brick building is a former flour mill.
Lou Weiss, the Capahas' pitching ace, lost his first encounter against a major league baseball team last night, when the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Belleville, Ill., Stags in an exhibition game at Belleville; Weiss went the entire game, while Elwin C. "Preacher" Roe, the Cardinals' new recruit from Arkansas, did the same; the score was 4-1.
Because of the inability of the contractor to build the bandstand in Courthouse Park in time for the open-air concert scheduled for this evening, the first concert of the season has been postponed until next Wednesday.
Jackson is preparing for its annual Homecomers reunion; the advance men for the airplane company that will give exhibitions are here to make arrangements; in looking over the baseball park, it was found that the bleachers will have to be removed to make room for the huge aircraft, as it takes considerable space to take off and land.
