25 years ago: Aug. 20, 1985

The long lines that formerly snaked around Southeast Missouri State University's enrollment office have disappeared; students enrolling for fall semester classes this year are doing it by way of modern technology in the university's new Enrollment Center; the process is now computerized, thanks to a new system installed with $40,000 from the University Foundation.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Voters here will probably be asked in November to approve a quarter-million-dollar revenue bond issue to help pay for the community's new water well project.

50 years ago: Aug. 20, 1960

Permits for nine residences and a $47,000, 14-room addition to a building occupied by a group of surgeons were issued during the week by the city of Cape Girardeau; the addition to the Surgical Building at 1912 Broadway is to be of masonry construction.

Staff Sisters of Saint Francis Hospital recently took time off from their duties for their annual picnic; the event was held at the Billy Walker cabin on Lake Wappapello.

75 years ago: Aug. 20, 1935

The Red Star suburb will again have the services of a full-time police officer; the city council has agreed that Mayor Edward L. Drum should appoint an officer for the residential area; there are a number of applicants for the job.

A two-story frame dwelling for Dr. and Mrs. Glenn J. Tygett on Alta Vista Drive is nearing completion.

100 years ago: Aug. 20, 1910

The Cape Girardeau City Council raises saloon licenses from $350 per year to $1,000; likewise, beer depots, which now pay $200 per year as special tax, will be paying $500 per year.

Marie Ruesskamp, at 81 one of Cape Girardeau's oldest residents, dies at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. Feldhoff, with whom she'd lived since the death of her husband about four years ago.
