The city expects to spend about $613,000 in meeting state requirements regarding the closing of the Cape Girardeau landfill; that's substantially less than the $5 million that the Missouri Department of Natural Resources had estimated.

1962

Bishop Ignatius J. Strecker dedicated his first church since becoming head of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese in formal ceremonies at the new $250,000 structure of the Immaculate Conception Parish at Jackson on Wednesday; the new church and adjoining rectory were financed through the Diocesan Expansion Fund.

An old-fashioned Homecomers, the 54th in the history of Jackson, came to an end last night, with a crowd estimated at 10,000 packing the midway and courthouse yard.

1937

The first rehearsal for the "Arabian Nights" spectacle, which will be performed at Houck Stadium from Sept. 14 to 16, is held in the afternoon in the gymnasium of Central High School; a cast of 600 will be selected for the production.

The cafeteria at the Teachers College, which had been in the Training School building for the past 14 years, is being moved to the basement of the Agriculture Building.

1912

Everet House has secured a contract from the county court to place into the belfry of the Jackson courthouse the old bell that has stood in the hall on the first floor since the wrecking of the old courthouse in 1909; many will be glad to hear the peals of the old bell again as in former years.

A resolution is presented to the city council by J.T. Wilson and W.H. Coerver asking that the question of municipal ownership of the water and light plants be again brought before the council for consideration, and that the vote against the ordinance at a previous meeting be reconsidered; after changing the amount of the bond issue from $225,000 to $250,000, and changing the date of the special election to Oct. 1, the ordinance passes by unanimous vote.
