Public works director Guy Lowes reveals the city has lost 226 commercial trash accounts since raising its garbage collection fees March 1; as a result, the city's transfer station, which went into operation in March and on full-scale basis in early April, has handled less trash than originally projected.

Mill Town Museum, which houses all the relics that used to be in the Oldtimers Agricultural Museum near Altenburg, Missouri, will hold a grand opening Tuesday; the museum is in the old handle factory in Jackson.

Uninterrupted Interstate 55 travel from Fruitland to Sikeston, Missouri, should become available at least by next year; given a favorable autumn for construction, there is an outside chance the entire length will be opened during this construction season.

State College lost its swimming and new assistant football coach just a few days after he arrived; Ralph "Bogey" Harrison Jr., announced his retirement for personal reasons and has elected to go into private business; he took over the coaching jobs here Aug. 1.

1939

With all arrangements made, employees of the shoe factory are looking forward to their big public picnic tomorrow at Fairground Park; today is a busy day at the park, as concession stands, a dancing pavilion and tents for the mounts in the horse show are being erected.

STEELE, Mo. -- While most cotton in the district is still in the blooming stage, Frank Stover, a Pemiscot County farmer, brings a load of freshly picked cotton to a gin here; employees of the Smith Brothers gin, astonished at the exceptionally early harvest, fires up the gin and puts the first bale through; it weighs 570 pounds.

William A. Tipton, of the firm Tipton & Mackey, St. Louis, is here supervising the finishing touches on the heating and ventilating system in the new Park Theater; this new "Aero" system changes the air in the building every 10 minutes.

A dredging machine on a barge at the foot of William Street starts work on the task of cleaning the bottom of the river along a line that marks the foundation for the concrete sea wall to be built between the present wall and the rock wall farther south; it's part of the Frisco riverfront development.
