Assembling and raising the scoreboard in the new Show Me Center is one of the last projects to be completed before the grand opening ceremonies Thursday; the scoreboard arrived yesterday from Indianapolis.

Immediate action needs to be taken to avoid a mental health crisis in Southeast Missouri, according to the Mental Health Association in Cape Girardeau County; the group cites mental health needs in the region, specifically needs for inpatient care for acute patients who are going without treatment now that Saint Francis Medical Center has closed its inpatient unit.

Charles L. Black Jr., formerly of Cape Girardeau, has been elected vice president of Hill and Knowlton, Inc., the nation's largest public relations counseling firm.

CAIRO, Ill. -- Seven persons were injured last night in an outbreak of racial violence at a Cairo roller skating rink, the scene of recent integration demonstration; included among the injured, who were all integrationists, was Charles Koen, 17, president of the Cairo chapter of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee; he was released from a hospital after being treated for a head cut.

1937

A Cape Girardeau man, attached to the 15th Infantry of the Army, is in the Sino-Japanese war zone; Pvt. Hugh Taylor, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas F. Taylor of Cape Girardeau, in a radiogram to his parents said his outfit has been ordered to "stand by" for emergency assignment; Taylor, who is attached to the 15th Infantry Band, has been in Tientsin, China, for nearly four years.

While several men work around a hay-baling machine in one of the barns on the F.A. Lorberg farm near Gordonville, they are surprised to see flames suddenly leap from the scattered hay and quickly ascend into the loft above; before anything can be done, the fire gains such headway that there is no stopping it; luckily, a favorable wind carries the flames away from the large two-story brick dwelling and a very large new barn.

Another citizens' mass meeting was held last night to discuss the school board and its dealings with textbook companies; it was learned that, in response to a request by concerned citizens, the Silver, Burdett & Company has returned its contract to the city, while the American Book Co., has refused to do so; a resolution was also unanimously adopted saying that in the future the school board shall hold its meetings at stated times and will transact those meetings openly.

Mrs. Nellie Stewart of Cairo, Ill., arrives in the evening to spend a few weeks with her daughter, Mrs. Oscar Ruediger, who has been ill.
