25 years ago: Aug. 18, 1982

A year ago, it didn't appear the sanitary landfill north of Cape Girardeau would last this long; now, however, thanks to a lease extension and the addition of extra cover dirt, city officials feel confident the present landfill will last well into next year; meanwhile, the search for a new landfill site continues.

Both the Democratic and Republican central committees in Cape Girardeau County held separate meetings last night to elect new county officers; Jackson lawyer Kevin Phillips was elected as the new chairman of the county's Republican committee, while Norman A. Robert Jr., was re-elected to serve as the chairman of the Democratic committee.

50 years ago: Aug. 18, 1957

The Rev. Frank C. Tucker, superintendent of the Cape Girardeau Methodist district, speaks at the Methodist Church in Chaffee, Mo., in the morning; he replaces the Rev. H.L. Wagner, who is on vacation.

John M. Hargans, superintendent of the Jackson plant of the International Shoe Co., was honored with a retirement dinner-dance at the American Legion Hall last night; he plans to retire Sept. 1 after 46 years with the company.

75 years ago: Aug. 18, 1932

With three patrolmen ill, what is left of Cape Girardeau's police force is finding it hard going; Paul McNeely, John Wilson and William Yount are off duty because of illness; special officer H.J. Reed is filling in, but during the day, Main Street is without an officer.

Jess Noland of Cape Girardeau, an unsuccessful candidate in the primary election for nomination for sheriff on the Democratic ticket, says he will run as a candidate for that office in the general election on an independent ticket.

100 years ago: Aug. 18, 1907

A special missionary service is held at the German Methodist Episcopal Church at which songs and subjects are presented by members of the church; Mrs. T.O. Ludwig, wife of the pastor, gives a talk.

The baseball team from Mine La Motte, Mo., fails to live up to its reputation, and the Cape Girardeau Capahas trounce the visitors 14-0; Harrigan pitches for the locals and has the supposed heavy hitters popping up all the way or fanning.
