The drab concrete floodwall along the Mississippi River here may take on a new look; a new, "Welcome to Cape Girardeau" mural is being planned for the river side of the wall, overlooking the downtown park.

For the second time in less than a year, Cape Girardeau County will have to replace a bridge because of an auto accident; the old truss bridge on County Road 459 going to Oak Ridge, about two and a half miles along Route D, was struck by a car Aug. 5 and has been closed ever since; the span cannot be repaired.

1964

The Cape Girardeau City Council grants a 30-day extension on the sewage disposal contract for the J.E. Latta Construction Co. of St. Louis; the extension puts the completion date at Sept. 8; the construction company has had difficulties beyond its control installing some equipment.

The Cape Girardeau Civic Center launches a $25,000 fundraising drive aimed at providing money to build a new center in the 1500 block of South Sprigg Street.

1939

A thief with an apparent yen for shiny floors, burglarized the Miller Grocery and Market last night, but took only liquid floor wax; Claude Miller, owner, reports only a half-dozen cans of pint-size liquid floor wax compound was stolen.

The downtown sales office of Cherry, the Florist, is moved from 815 Broadway across the street to 814 Broadway; this location, formerly the old Clifton dwelling, is a two-story brick structure that has been remodeled; a conservatory for display purposes has been built on the front of the building; the former Cherry location has been leased to the Novelty Shop, operated by Minnie Brandon.

1914

Scoutmaster Wilson Bain and H.A. Nussbaum, president of the Scout council, drove out to Burfordville on Sunday and picked a site for the Boy Scout encampment, which will be held next week; the site chosen is about a quarter of a mile below the large flour mill.

Herman Bock has bought the Tuck and Divine residence property on Frederick Street, just north of Broadway, taking possession Saturday; this is one of the nicest residences in the city; Messrs. Tuck and Divine, foremen of departments of the shoe factory, have occupied the home for quite a while.
