25 years ago: Aug. 17, 1982

A 52 percent increase in Cape Girardeau County's August sales tax check was the result of an $11 million state accounting error; Cape Girardeau received $40,000 more than it should have received.

The reported disappearance of "Big Jim," the 18 1/2-foot python missing in Cape Girardeau since July 24, has prompted the city council to look into adopting an ordinance that would ban the ownership of pets that aren't natural to this area.

50 years ago: Aug. 17, 1957

Resources of the U.S. Medical Research Board have been called upon for any information medical science has that might point to why wasp stings have brought death to one person and made at least three others critically ill in the Cape Girardeau area in less than two months; physicians here are hoping to find some lead to the cause of the violent reactions reported from wasp springs in the district.

State College authorities issue an urgent appeal to Cape Girardeau residents who have rooms that aren't in use, or who can arrange for additional rooms, to make them available for students in the fall term.

75 years ago: Aug. 17, 1932

Remodeling of a two-story, 10-room brick house at 224 N. Ellis St., formerly the Darnell residence, into a two-family apartment has begun; hardwood floors have been placed, the walls have been redecorated and a new composition asbestos shingle roof has been put on.

Since being placed in the hands of a receiver July 8, the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge is being operated at a reduced cost that indicates an annual savings of $2,400, according to a report of the receiver, Clyde A. Vandivort, filed in federal court.

100 years ago: Aug. 17, 1907

The task of engaging the various speakers, lecturers, entertainers, artists and musicians for the 10-day Chautauqua, beginning Sept. 6, has about been completed; among those performing at the event will be evangelist Lincoln McConnell.

Alfred Gilbert, a recent graduate from the Normal School and a son of the Rev. Gilbert of Cape Girardeau, leaves to teach school near New Madrid, Mo.
