Although Walter Collins was never a Boy Scout as a youngster, he's made up for it over the years; the scouting volunteer was honored last night by Boy Scout Troop 2 at Grace Methodist Church for 25 years of service to the troop.

1963

A proposal to extend Cape Girardeau's city limits westward to Interstate 55 and northward to Wedekind Park will be presented to the city council by the Planning and Zoning Commission; the recommendation was adopted at last night's commission meeting.

Crites and Sailer Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau is awarded the contract for building the new junior high school for the Jackson R-2 School District.

1938

A delegation of black residents once again visited the city council yesterday to inquire what had been done to secure a playground for black children; Mayor Edward L. Drum replied that the suggestion of using Missouri Park on North Street for that purpose met with opposition, chiefly from members of organizations who have long planned to make the park into a flower garden or memorial to Louis Lorimier.

Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Fischer have taken over the management of the Umbeck Grocery, 298 N. West End Blvd., having purchased the business from C.W. Umbeck, who operated the store since 1925.

1913

Frank Talbot, the owner of the Hippodrome in St. Louis, the largest 5- and 10-cent theater in the world, will visit Poplar Bluff, Mo., on Monday to consider putting in a theater there; a representative of Talbot was in Cape Girardeau recently for the same purpose.

The Chautauqua was brought to a close last night with the finest band concert ever heard here; the Chautauqua wasn't a financial success; the extreme hot weather and the fact many who normally attend such gatherings were out of town combined to reduce attendance; organizers conclude Cape Girardeau isn't a Chautauqua town; it is more a tent show town.
