In the absence of the pastor, the Rev. H.C. Holliday, who is on vacation, Rush Limbaugh addresses the congregation of Centenary Methodist Church in the morning; Limbaugh, who recently spent several months in India, gives his impressions of Methodist churches in that country.

Cape Girardeau enjoys its heaviest rain since June 23, a thunderstorm spawning 1.33 inches that brings the August total to 1.75 inches.

75 years ago: Aug. 16, 1934

A suit to collect tuition in return for instruction given two high school pupils is filed in Circuit Court by the Jackson School District against the Cane Creek district; the Jackson district seeks a judgment of $139.

A boiler room extension is being constructed at the New Rigdon Laundry, 22 N. Sprigg St.; the brick addition will be 10 feet wide and 5 feet long, and enlarges the present boiler room so that a larger boiler can be installed.

100 years ago: Aug. 16, 1909

About 20 prominent Cape Girardeau residents responded yesterday to the call issued by Edward F. Regenhardt for a meeting to lay preliminary plans for the Taft Day celebration in October; a 60-minute program was planned, which includes an automobile drive to the Normal School, where the president will address the crowd and plant a tree.

Mrs. Dora Schlueter, 90, widow of Louis Schlueter, died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. List, at the corner of Broadway and Lorimier Street.
