The Women's Council of St. Vincent's Catholic Church sponsors its second annual Food and Fashion Festival in the afternoon; there is a salad luncheon and fashion show; models are members of the council, who wear clothes and accessories from Coast 2 Coast, Glik's Ltd., Maurice's, Naturalizer and 16 Plus.

Orville and Jay Grim, a father-son team, have opened the Phillips 66 Service Station and Garage at 915 Broadway.

1963

A flatbed trailer truck carrying a bulldozer slides for about 100 yards against the guardrail of Interstate 55's Wedekind Park overpass in the morning, dropping its heavy cargo to the pavement; the driver is unhurt in the accident, which he attributes to a blowout of the right front tire; both southbound lanes of traffic are blocked for about two hours.

It is announced by the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce that Gov. John M. Dalton and Marvin J. Snider, chief engineer for the Missouri State Highway Department, will be here to cut the ribbon for the formal opening of Interstate 55 on Sept. 8.

1938

Jackson celebrates the 50th anniversary of the ordination of the Rev. W.G. Langehennig, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church for more than 40 years; an all-day service is held in the auditorium of the high school; Langehennig recently informed his congregation of his desire to retire; his flock deeded him a lot near the church, where he will build a dwelling in which to spend the rest of his life.

The Rev. Harry W. Schweinsberg, a missionary among the Indians in Bolivia, speaks at both services at First Baptist Church.

1913

The firm of Hope & Cotner, two very progressive young men who have the Ford automobile agency in Cape Girardeau and are making a record for sales, will soon have a model garage out on Broadway; contractor C.J. Reisenbichler starts work in the morning on a building, which will be 50 feet east of the Drusch building at the corner of Broadway and Ellis Street.

This evening's Chautauqua program includes artist Clayton Conrad, who draws pictures and tells tales to amuse his audience, and Sumner R. Vinton, who shows moving pictures of India.
