John Fadler, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fadler of Oak Ridge, has received the Coors Recycling Award for June; the 10th-grader at Oak Ridge High School collected 189 pounds of aluminum.
Construction has begun on one of five buildings being erected by Cape LaCroix Apartments just off Bloomfield Street; the building will have 12 family apartment; in all, 44 units will be added to the 165 others on the site, bringing the total to 209 family units.

Summer term classes end at State College, and teachers as well as students will have close to a month to rest before the fall term begins Sept. 8; commencement exercises for the summer graduating class will be held tomorrow evening on the campus in front of Academic Hall; the commencement speaker will be Carl R. Reng, president of Arkansas State College at Jonesboro.
Five members of the William J. Spelius family of Wyoming, Ohio, stopped for a brief time in Cape Girardeau yesterday as they made a 3,200-mile boat trip that began at Fort Benton, Mont., and will end at Evansville, Ind.

Retiring administrative officers of the Teachers College speak at Sunday services at Centenary Methodist Church; Dr. Joseph A. Serena, president-elect of Bethany College in Bethany, W.Va., speaks at the morning hour, while Dean R.S. Douglass speaks in the evening.
The Rev. R.L. Harrell, pastor of First Christian Church, preaches at the evening union services sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance at Courthouse Park.
100 years ago: Aug. 13, 1908
Contractor Mullins has appointed W.R. Best superintendent of construction for the sewer system at Cape Girardeau; he has had years of experience in building sewer systems; work here has progressed slowly, with the digging machine giving considerable trouble.
Among other pieces of business conducted last week, the Cape Girardeau County Court ordered the county clerk to advertise for the sale of the old courthouse in Jackson as well as to receive bids for tearing down the old building; the court reserved all vault doors and fixtures in the structure.
