After being in place little more than a month, the first of the mercury vapor lights installed along Kingshighway fell "victim" to a truck yesterday; the driver was turning into the Barn Drive-In when he overshot the driveway; he was backing the 2 1/2-ton truck owned by Bluff City Beer and Produce Co. of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, when he struck the ornamental concrete light standard.

The Jackson School Board has begun preparing alternate plans for teaching junior high school pupils in the senior high this fall if the new junior high isn't completed by Aug. 31.

GRASSY, Mo. -- Three days of freedom from housekeeping worries ends for 37 mothers from four counties who, under the direction of home economics demonstration agents from three of the counties, immensely enjoyed their vacation rest-camp at Camp Rotary on the Castor River; for many of the mothers, it was the first time away from their families in years.

The peak of the peach harvest is at hand as crews of pickers are taking the ripe fruit from trees of the Cape Girardeau area orchards; the fruit is a bit off what had been expected; housewives may buy high-class fruit from $1 to $1.50 per bushel.

A.N. Tinsley, chairman of the fall festivities committee, says he has been in correspondence with a Chicago concern that has offered to come here and put on a great water carnival for two nights during fair week.

There is simply no use trying to dance, ride on street cars, drive on roads or perform any duty that requires light; a million little green, hard-winged bugs descend on the city and take it without a fight; they rout everything in their presence and invade the sanctity of homes and stores, sending everybody hustling to bed to escape their torments.
