25 years ago: Aug. 11, 1980

Renovation work on the top floor of the old Cape Girardeau library building is being completed, and circuit clerk staff is expected to begin moving in at the end of the week.

Although it's not getting as much publicity, August has been just as hot and dry as July; a high of 101 degrees was reached Saturday at the municipal airport; yesterday's high brushed the century mark at 99.

50 years ago: Aug. 11, 1955

Except for a single member, yet to be employed for the science department, the faculty for State College was brought to full complement yesterday by the board of regents with the employment of three replacements and seven additional faculty members; this year's faculty will number 74.

Funeral for Mary Hrebec Sebek, former resident of Cape Girardeau, who died Aug. 9 in St. Louis, will be held tomorrow at St. Louis, with interment in Memorial Park Cemetery; she was the wife of the late Anton Sebek, former operator of Sebek Meat Packing Co.; he died in 1937; she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George Aldridge of St. Louis; a son, Albert "Bud" Sebek of Los Angeles, Calif., and a grandson.

75 years ago: Aug. 11, 1930

Although rainfall over the Cape Girardeau district was light late Saturday, the precipitation brought with it a drop in temperature that gave comfort to a large area.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- With 576 hours to his credit at 1 p.m., Leon Crader is still up in his tree and is still intent on becoming the champion tree-sitter; all other Southeast Missouri competitors have been eliminated for some time; Crader says his only worry is that school may begin too soon.

100 years ago: Aug. 11, 1905

Upper Broadway will soon have one of the largest mercantile houses in the city, if the statements of the proprietors are carried out; the new building at the corner of Broadway and Middle streets has been leased to Paul and Will Hinchey of De Soto, Mo., and a man named Greene from St. Louis, who will put in a stock of general dry goods and notionsk.

W.C. Hayes of De Soto, Mo., has purchased the Scott Hotel from George Proffer and will take charge next week; Hayes has had charge of the depot cafe at De Soto and has a wide reputation as a hotel man; he is a brother to Jackson Mayor Ed Hayes.
