The Cape Girardeau City Council votes 5 to 1 to appropriate $22,500 to help pay for a study into the feasibility of establishing a multipurpose sports and convention facility here.

County Court Presiding Judge Gene Huckstep says the Common Pleas Courthouse Park fountain and its soldier statue may be dismantled in the near future for major repairs to restore the memorial; the extensive renovations required would cost an estimated $8,000.

50 years ago: Aug. 10, 1957

Troops of the 140th Infantry Regiment, Missouri National Guard, leave for two weeks of training at Camp Ripley, Minn., aboard special Frisco trains from Cape Girardeau and other towns in Southeast Missouri.

In the past 11 school years, the cost of educating a pupil in the Cape Girardeau public schools has risen 144.5 percent, and there is no indication that the spiraling cost of education will stop; figures in the annual report of Superintendent L.J. Schultz show that last school year it cost $212.59 to educate a Cape Girardeau pupil.

75 years ago: Aug. 10, 1932

Three youths, two of whom resided in Cape Girardeau, are killed instantly at 1:55 a.m. when a southbound Frisco freight train derails two miles north of Bainbridge, Mo., after striking a tree blown on the tracks during a windstorm; dead are Lonzo Cronenbold, 18, and Clint Utley, 17, both of Cape Girardeau, and a third unidentified man.

Following a well-drawn map left mysteriously in the office of Constable C.C. Eddleman two days ago, officers locate a 60-gallon liquor still in the woods two miles southeast of Delta.

100 years ago: Aug. 10, 1907

Company K of the National Guard of Missouri, under the command of Capt. M.A. Grissom, leaves Cape Girardeau on the St. Louis train on its way to St. Joseph, Mo., for the annual encampment; Dr. C.E. Schuchert's band is also attending the encampment; the band, under the direction of Dr. C.E. Schuchert, has been drilling with the regulars.

Frank McKinney, who disappeared from Oak Ridge 30 years ago, has returned to that town only to find his wife happily married to another man.
