25 years ago: Aug. 10, 1980

BENTON, Mo. -- The Rev. James Reynolds has been appointed pastor of St. Denis Catholic Parish in Benton by Bishop Bernard Law of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Catholic Diocese; Reynolds, who will assume his new duties Aug. 28, replaces the Rev. John W. Baker, who has been granted a sabbatical for study.

Already facing a determined election challenge from St. Louis County Supervisor Gene McNary, Sen. Thomas F. Eagleton now finds himself under attack from a source outside the state.

50 years ago: Aug. 10, 1955

Relief from several weeks of drought comes to some sections of north Cape Girardeau County in heavy rainfall early in the day, while other areas are reported to have been missed by the downpour; Cape Girardeau receives 1.48 inches by 1 p.m.

Five rural schoolhouses, no longer used since the Jackson school district was reorganized, have been sold; the buildings are the Sheppard school at Neelys Landing, which was sold to the Neelys Landing Extension Club; the Roberts schoolhouse, sold to the Roberts Extension Club; the Poplar Ridge building to the Poplar Ridge 4-H Club; the Hickory Grove house to the Hickory Grove 4-H Club, and the Liberty No. 2 schoolhouse to Clara Koeppel.

75 years ago: Aug. 10, 1930

Dean R.S. Douglass of the Teachers College speaks in the morning at Christ Evangelical Church in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. R. Lehmann, who, with his family, is visiting relatives in northern Ohio.

The Rev. Robert L. Harrell, pastor of the First Christian Church, preaches in the evening at union services at Common Pleas Courthouse Park; his topic is "As We Be Ourselves."

100 years ago: Aug. 10, 1905

Leming & Ponder, who have the contract for the construction of the street railway, have begun building a headquarters house near the Houck depot, and the Houck road is at work on a special switch track just southwest of the depot and running to Frederick Street, where the rails, ties and other construction material will be unloaded; as soon as rails begin arriving, work will be started on the track beginning on Frederick and running north to Broadway, and then both directions on Broadway.

At Monday's city council meeting, Councilman Fred Kage was made chairman of the street and wharf committee; under his direction, things are getting done; the drain pipe at Broadway and Main is being fixed properly.
