City officials and state legislators turn out in the morning at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport for the ribbon-cutting ceremony and inaugural flight of Republic Express Airlines, a new local air carrier.

50 years ago: Aug. 1, 1961

There is some hedging, but farmers in Cape Girardeau County and in Southeast Missouri are unable to conceal their delight over crop prospects at their current stage of development; a cold, wet spring that delayed some planting and caused replanting in many instances has turned into an ideal crop-growing summer.

Cramer W. LaPierre, 57, formerly of Jackson, has been named executive vice president of the General Electric Co. in New York City.

75 years ago: Aug. 1, 1936

The proposed occupational tax ordinance, which seemed a sure bet for passage earlier in the week, now looks in doubt; one of the city council members is said to be considering voting against the ordinance, along with Commissioner Phil H. Steck, who has always opposed its passage.

A depth of 780 feet has been reached in digging a well at the Pioneer Orchards on Bloomfield Road owned by Theodore and Henry Ochs; a desired 30 gallons of water per minute is expected at 800 feet; E.M. Gould is drilling the well.

100 years ago: Aug. 1, 1911

Because of the heavy rain, the "Pompeii" spectacle won't be given this evening; rain in no way affects the show, but the heavy downpour has made the seats and grounds at the fairgrounds too wet for spectators.

At a recent meeting of the board of trustees of the Normal School, A.L. McCarthy of Indiana was elected assistant professor of mathematics to succeed professor White, who resigned to go to California.
