A large milking barn on the Southeast Missouri State University Farm was destroyed by fire late last night; by the time it was discovered, the building was engulfed in flames, and there was little firefighters could do except to protect other nearby buildings.
Ford Meat Co., 1225 S. Kingshighway, is under new ownership; the market, which was established by the late Lloyd N. Ford in 1958, has been purchased by Lester Maevers, owner of Schapers IGA Foodliner in Jackson, and Bob Osborn, who recently joined the Schapers store.
The Army Corps of Engineers announces work will begin immediately on the final link in Cape Girardeau's flood-control system; the contract for the work has been awarded to the J.E. Latta Construction Co. of St. Louis; the work will connect the concrete floodwall, which now ends at the foot of Bellevue Street, with the earthen levee near the International Shoe Co. plant.
Park employees have begun removing water plant growth from the lagoon in Capaha Park; in a short time, the growth has reached underwater junglelike proportions; the plants started growing from seeds blown into the bottom of the lagoon when it was drained for repairs last fall.
Instruction cost in the public schools of Cape Girardeau during the 1937-38 year was $51.14 per pupil for the term, an increase of $4.30 per pupil over the previous year; this includes salaries of teachers, water, lights and power, janitor service, telephones, fuel and supplies of instruction and is based on the average daily attendance by pupils.
Hillard Brewster, landscape director for the State Highway Department, with Paul H. Summers assisting, spent several days this week studying and charting Highway 61 from Cape Girardeau to Jackson for a definite beautification plan.
Cape Girardeau receives free textbooks for its public school pupils; in a very light vote yesterday, the few interested citizens voted 4-1 in favor of free textbooks, 299 to 74.
The new apartment house being built by the Bahns on South Spanish Street is rapidly nearing completion; it will prove a great improvement for the unsightly corner.
