The work force at Superior Electric Products Co. will be increased about 35 when a current vacation period comes to an end and production begins July 18 on winter items; Joseph H. Quatmann Jr., president of the company, says business volume looks promising for the fall, necessitating the increase of employees.

Ken Inman, a former Southeast Missouri State gridiron star, will be among the 30 rookies who will be competing against 32 veterans for one of 36 places on the Green Bay Packers football roster when the National Football League team opens preseason practice in two weeks.

75 years ago: July 6, 1935

Hot weather has settled across the Cape Girardeau area; the temperature topped out yesterday at 96 degrees.

A road five miles long across the Old Field district near Randles and Arbor may be built in the near future, according to Fred A. Groves and others interested in getting an all-weather outlet for the rich farming area; Groves is one of those owning land near the proposed road.

100 years ago: July 6, 1910

I.R. Kelso, president of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, and W.H. Coerver, representing Saint Francis Hospital, yesterday met in St. Louis with Archbishop John J. Glennon and the mother superior of the Franciscan order, relative to the hospital situation here; they arranged for the payment of donations toward the $20,000 fund, to be made in installments over three years.

Percy Eldridge, formerly with the Frisco Railroad, but now a liveryman of Commerce, Mo., is in Cape Girardeau on business.
